Facom CDX - Super 3/8" Drive

Overview

Facom offers 2 different 3/8" drive systems - their standard "Junior" series (square drive) and their high performance "Super 3/8 Drive System" (splined drive). The latter is unique to Facom, offering the compactness of 3/8" drive and the ISO strength of 1/2" drive. Super 3/8" drive sockets are technically capable of torque to 350 ft lbs.

CDX drive sockets will still work with square drive ratchets, torque wrenches and adapters are available (see below) to use square drive specialty sockets (eg, spark plug sockets, allen sockets, torx sockets, etc) with Facom's excellent SJ171 locking ratchet.

Super 3/8" Drive CDX Adapters

  • SJ.230 - Adapter (CDX to 3/8" square drive)
  • SJ.231 - Adapter (1/2" square drive to CDX
  • SJ.232 - Adapter (CDX to 1/2" square drive)

CDX Kits Currently Available

Facom offers a nice selection of CDX sockets (metric 6pt and 12pt), ratchets and accessories in Europe. Unfortunately, SK never brought this part of the Facom product line to the US although I was able to special order a few sets for personal use and evaluation.

The CDX1 set is very basic but a nice kit to throw in the car for emergencies. With the addition of a breaker bar, an adapter or 2, and a few specialty sockets, it'll handle just about any fastener you throw at it.

This kit includes (13) 6-point CDX sockets (8mm, 10-19mm, 22mm and 24mm), a locking 5" extension and an SJ171 CDX ratchet.

With Stanley-Proto as the new owner of Facom, I've recently been able to import Facom's largest metric CDX kit....CDX5. This set includes 17 6pt CDX sockets (8mm, 10-19mm, 21-22mm, 24mm, 27mm, 30mm and 32mm), a 5" and 10" locking extension, a CDX universal joint, a pair of CDX to square drive adapters, and the long-reach locking SJ.174 CDX ratchet.

The only other CDX kit I have at this time is the Limited Edition Ferrari Set (#2). Only 2,000 of these were produced worldwide with 300 coming to the North American market.

Kits are individually numbered and all of the tools (excluding the 13 bits) have been finished with a black nickel plating. This set is for collectors. If you want a set thats more usable, go with the basis CDX kit.
